Abstract: 

In my talk I will pinpoint some fundamental characteristics of language production in a comparative perspective between speech and writing, and suggest a partly new conceptual approach: that of seeing language production basically as a process of drafting.

It is concluded that a comprehensive model of language production must put the affordances of the external representation in a key position in order better to understand the temporal, social and cognitive organization of language production in speech and writing.

Finally, a few implications for further research are formulated.
