Résumé. How a multilingual can or chooses to use their language(s) might depend on the communicative context they are in. In many contexts, multilinguals need language control to use words in the language(s) they want to or have to use, while avoiding interference from the other language(s). This language control is argued to be adaptive to interactional contexts and demands. In this talk, I will discuss how language control does (and does not) adapt to different levels of context, including the immediate context (e.g., the type of switching environment); the language behaviour of other multilinguals in that context; and potentially more long-term after moving to a new language environment. I will end by briefly discussing our current research projects examining these questions in relation to cognitive ageing.
