In this talk, I will present selected findings from a 10-year longitudinal study tracking a group of English learners from grade 1 of primary school to grade 10, the end of compulsory secondary education. Motivated by the importance of studying change over time and the need for longitudinal research in second language acquisition, we assessed learners’ productive, receptive, and metalinguistic skills, explored their motivation and attitudes toward English and their learning environment, and observed their development from childhood to adolescence. Our findings offer valuable insights into why some learners eventually fared better than others, highlighting the key factors and their interplay: parental education levels, language learning aptitude, motivational profiles, and learning opportunities both inside and outside the school.
